Dude, I am totally with you on the Stphenson hate. I read Cryptonomicon on the recommendation of a couple of friends and found it to be the dullest, yes, most padded books ever… Do I need to read a page on how the protagonist likes his cereal? No. Does it have *anything* to do with the rest of the novel? No…………..

The Badger King
While I admit Stephenson has gotten prosier over time, I could sorta handle SNOW CRASH. DIAMOND AGE is where he started to get *really* unhinged. Having said that, I found his novel ZODIAK, which I think predates Snow Crash (or maybe came out right afterwards) to be a lot easier to read, and a better book. I like parts of SNOW CRASH, but the more I read Stephenson, the more he lulls me to sleep. I want to like him… but I just….. can’t…….. stay………zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I’m a total Stephenson non-fan as well. All of his books have left me utterly underwhelmed. Boring writing and dull characters.
The wildly incorrect soothsaying from cyberpunk’s heyday regarding Japan ruling the entire planet by now still makes me chuckle just a little. Where did the idea come from? The impressive sales of Nintendo?
It came from the meteoric growth of Japan’s GDP during that time and in previous decades, coupled with general crappy economic performance and failing confidence in the West. There was also a perverse wishful-thinking tendency among left-leaning Western intellectuals, it has to be said. People wanted Japan as an alternative to US power.
